Clew Bay Heritage Centre

 Situated in a 19th century building, the Clew Bay Heritage Centre traces the history of Westport and the Clew Bay area from pre-christian times to the present. Using a scale model of Westport, our guide will take you on a tour of the town. Hear the story of how Grainne Uaile, the famous Pirate Queen, got her name and how she divorced her second husband.

View the portrait of the beautiful Maud Gonne MacBride and learn of her connection to Westport through her husband, Major John MacBride, his participation in the 1916 Rebellion and his subsequent execution.

Opening Hours

Open all year: Monday to Friday

10.30am – 2pm

June to September: Monday to Friday

10am – 5pm,

July and August: Monday to Friday

10am – 5pm, plus Sunday 3pm – 5pm

The Quay, Westport.

Walking Tour of Westport is conducted by qualified guides from The Clew Bay Heritage Centre, every Wed. for the months of July and August.

Meeting point:       The Clock (top of Bridge Street).
Time:         11.00.a.m.
